IT'S the time of the year when families in our kindergarten and around Australia are thinking about school for 2015.

For those beginning school for the first time next year, this time can pose some anxious questions, thoughts and anticipation.

Children are, of course, aware this next step is coming but as it draws closer, we as educators and parents should focus on ensuring a smooth transition into school.

A lot of the preparation for school happens unconsciously as children play, interact with adults and peers, and develop independence and self-help skills at home and at kindergarten or childcare.

The Queensland and Federal government are providing more funding towards an emphasis on making the transition to school smoother for everyone concerned.

Schools, kindergartens and childcare centres are working closer together to ensure children are aware of what to expect at school, and that teachers are aware of each child's experience and interests by way of transition statements; forms that parents can give to the new school from their child's kindergarten teacher.

Parents often ask how they can help their child get ready for school.

While the answer is simple, there are many aspects of going to school that we may not consider.

If children are armed with knowledge about the environment they are going into, and have the confidence and self-reliance to cope with the demands and expectations of school, the transition will be easier for them.
