Little Teachers Help Children Develop Social Skills in the Classroom


A "BABY celebration" was held at the Cardiff City Stadium and marked the end of this year's Roots of Empathy programme in Wales.

Supported by the Big Lottery Fund, it is designed to foster the development of empathy and pro-social skills in children by bringing a baby and their parent into the classroom over the course of a school year.

It has been used as a tool to confront and stop bullying in schools by teaching children empathy with others. It has also proven beneficial for the parents and babies taking part.

The programme, originated in Canada in 1996, was introduced to primaries in Cardiff, Caerphilly, Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan by Action for Children.

Brigitte Gater, director of children's services at Action for Children in Wales, said: "Today's celebration gives pupils and teachers, as well as staff from Cardiff council and Action for Children, the perfect opportunity to thank the babies for being such wonderful tiny teachers.

"Roots of Empathy helps schoolchildren to better understand their own feelings and the feelings of others. We have delivered the programme to 27 schools in Wales this year - including 21 in South Wales - and we simply could not have done it without our tiny teachers and their parents. …
