Council Hopefuls Face Anxious Wait for Final Numbers Count; Crs Carol Taylor and Nancy Sommerfield Hold Early Lead


SLOW counting means the region is no closer to finding out who will make up the 10 councillors on Toowoomba Regional Council.

Provisional results look good for the incumbent councillors, but three empty seats left open by the retiring councillors are up for grabs.

Cr Carol Taylor was leading the race on 3098 votes yesterday when counting stopped at 5pm.

She was followed closely by Cr Nancy Sommerfield on 2977.

Geoff McDonald had a late surge finishing the day on 2953.

Newcomer James O'Shea 2798 and Megan O'Hara Sullivan 2785 made up the top five.

Deputy Mayor Mike Williams 2603, Joe Ramia 2466, Chris Tait 2453, Bill Cahill 2445 and Anne Glasheen also made the top 10.

Trailing close behind were Tressa Lindenberg 2120, David Campbell 1986, Craig Stibbard 1857 and Chris McGaw 1827.

It's very much early days though with less than 4% of the 110,214 votes counted.

A final result may not be known until Wednesday.

Cr Carol Taylor thanked members of the community for their confidence in her, but said there was a long way to go.

"I don't think anyone should be discouraged or encouraged at this point, because it's just a picture at this point in time," she said.

Cr Taylor said the fact that all of the sitting councillors were in the top 10 was a vote of confidence in the former council. …
