'Use New Healthcare System across Region' TEAMS WITH GPS, PRACTICE NURSES AND THERAPISTS 'WORKING A TREAT'

A GROUNDBREAKING system of providing primary health care which was launched three months ago has been so successful that it should be copied across North Wales.

That is the view of Denbighshire councillors of the new-style system covering Prestatyn and Rhuddlan and run by the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

The changes were introduced at the beginning of April following the decision of three GP practices - two in Prestatyn and one in Rhuddlan - not to renew their contracts. The underlying reason was a problem in recruiting new doctors.

The practices had a combined total of 23,000 patients and instead of trying to find new contractors the Health Board opted for a different type of provision based on a system adopted in Alaska.

Five existing GPs remained and five new ones were appointed, and all now form part of teams which also include practice nurses, team co-ordinators, occupational therapists and pharmacists. Physiotherapists and a part-time audiologist have also recently been added.

Under the set-up patients can have on-the-day appointments at the Central surgery in Prestatyn if they call before 4pm.

Dr Chris Stockport, area medical director who is leading the Healthy Prestatyn Iach and Healthy Rhuddlan Iach project, told members of Denbighshire Council's partnerships scrutiny committee: "It is working a treat". …
