Teacher Preparation Programs: UCM Department of Middle, Secondary and Adult Education


WE AS CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) STAKEHOLDERS MAY SEE MANY FUTURE CTE teachers wherever we look. Maybe it's a family member, a friend or the child of a colleague. Or maybe it's one of our students who reminds us of ourselves when we were younger and/or exhibits some of those innate "art" of teaching skills while helping others in our classrooms. Maybe it's an advisory committee member who is ready to make a difference and enter the profession to help educate the next generation of the skilled workforce. Obviously the pathway to CTE teaching may be different depending on one's career choice, CTE area, existing career experience and their level of education (among other things). Regardless of the individual's portfolio, the University of Central Missouri can help them succeed in their career goal of becoming a CTE teacher.

Missouri, like many states, has multiple pathways into the teaching profession. Some pathways require industry experience supplemented by a sequence of professional education courses, while other pathways require a "teacher education" bachelor's degree. Still other pathways allow professionals with non-education bachelor's degrees to pursue alternative certification within a graduate education program.

Industry-based Teacher Preparation Programs

So what drives the University of Central Missouri's teacher preparation programs to the forefront of the profession? For the industry-based teacher preparation programs for new teachers in skilled technical sciences (STS), health sciences (HS) and JROTC, it's a new Southern Regional Education Board (SREB)/Teaching to Lead-based "just in time" cohort model that redefines how UCM prepares new STS, HS and JROTC teachers. This innovative program was Career and Technical Center director requested; Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education approved; and can be applied to the UCM online BS in Occupational Education degree.

While we still offer traditional 16-week new teacher courses (e.g., curriculum construction, teaching methods, student performance assessment, guidance), the new Career and Technical Teacher Education (CTTE) model delivers the needed teaching skills as our new, provisionally certified teachers need them over a two-year period while pursuing their full teaching certificate.

* Overview of teaching: During their first semester, new teachers are introduced to the teaching profession and CTE in general, as well as curriculum (lesson planning, curriculum alignment), teaching methods, student assessment and classroom management.

* Timely instruction: The first semester curriculum also includes timely instruction on other "what about?" topics, such as advisory committees, parent/teacher conferencing, career and technical student organization (CTSO) programs of work, laboratory materials and equipment (program budgets), and student development.

* Progression at a rigorous yet relevant pace: Over their next two years, new teachers will progress into more advanced topics in the core areas of curriculum (curriculum mapping, scope and sequence), delivery (differentiating), and assessment (formative and summative, data awareness), while learning about and applying academic integration, student learning styles, students with special needs, college and career planning/readiness, and project-based learning. …
