The new ITEEA Elementary School coming in 2018 needs a playground design! This activity challenges students to design a playground that is safe, fun, educational, and great for physical fitness.

2018 Health and PE Engineering Challenge Team:

DESIGN CHALLENGE

The new ITEEA Elementary School coming in 2018 needs a playground design! Design a playground that is safe, fun, educational, and great for physical fitness.

Your team needs to design and build a model of your playground. Physical fitness components for cardio, strength, and flexibility must be included. The playground should be attractive looking so people will want to play and have fun.

Each person on the team is to build at least one structure for the playground. Each team needs to have at least three structures for their playground. Your playground might include a running track for cardio exercise, pull-up bar for upper body strength, and a rock wall for overall strength.

At the end, tell the judges about your playground and why we should invest in your playground.

Number of participants per team: 3

Time Required for event: 45 minutes (1 hour max)

Tools: Ruler, scissors, push-pins Materials:

* Challenge Materials Needed (include adhesive and tools needed): Tape (clear and masking), glue, tissue paper, paper towels, tablecloth, construction paper, straws, brads, wooden dowels, craft sticks, poster board or tag board (1/2 or 1/4 per team), recyclable, random supplies for playground, rubber bands, pipe cleaners.

Cindy M. K. Jones has been a Physical Education teacher for 30 years. She has received numerous awards for her STEM in The Gym program with Pitsco Education. Her STEM in the Gym program received the GESS, Global Education Systems Solutions Award in 2016 for adding academics to exercise with Simple Machines. Cindy received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia (where she was awarded the Gunsten Leadership Award and the Student Teacher of the Year Award).
