Crownover, Catherine, The Florida Times Union

Soon there will be a variety of nature, history, science and technology for shoppers at The Avenues to explore.

Discovery Communications Inc. is converting The Nature Co. at The Avenues mall into one of its new Discovery Channel Stores.

Bethesda, Md.-based Discovery Communications bought The Nature Co. in 1996 with the intention of converting the chain's stores into Discovery Channel units.

"Our Discovery Channel Stores will focus on products that will help people discover their world," said Kim Airhart, spokeswoman. "Our products will include items related to world cultures, history, science, aviation, geology and exploration."

The store is scheduled to open in July, three months after The Nature Co. closed.

By 2000, Discovery Communications expects to operate about 120 Discovery Channel Stores across the country through a combination of conversions and new store openings. The first store opened in 1998 in Washington, D.C.

The Discovery Channel Store will join a variety of other new retailers at The Avenues including the Yankee Candle Co., Thomas Kinkade Gallery, Successories and a shoe superstore that combined Foot Locker, Lady Foot Locker and Kids Foot Locker under one roof.

Dion, who previously worked as the executive chef at the Dolphin Depot, plans to serve a variety of entrees made from steaks, seafood, pasta, chicken and veal. "I'm known to have a taste for the unusual," said Dion.

"It's the hottest thing around," said Dion. "It's the whole show. We're almost stars. …
