Chadwyck-Healey Offers Four New CD-ROMs
Chadwyck-Healey, Inc. has announced the release of the following publications on CD-ROM: Bibliography of American Literature, the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature, The Times Literary Supplement, and FT Prices on CD-ROM.
Bibliography of American Literature
According to the company, Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) is widely recognized as one of the most accurate and comprehensive guides ever published for the study of American literature and literary history. J. Harner, of the Literary Research Guide, said, "The meticulous examination of copies in public as well as private collections, extensive research in copyright record and publishers' archives, and a remarkable degree of accuracy make BAL one of the monumental bibliographies of this century."
BAL provides a standard bibliographical description for the original book publication of the works of 281 significant American authors from the American Revolution through 1930. It contains records for almost 40,000 works.
On CD-ROM or the Web, all nine volumes of BAL are fully searchable together. BAL divides each author's list of works into sections, including Primary Works, Reprints, and References. For each primary book listed, a title-page transcription is provided along with details of the pagination, collation, binding (including cloth grain), and publication history. The location of at least one copy is given, as well as a selected list of bibliographical and biographical works.
Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature
The Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL) is now available in its entirety on CD-ROM and on the Web as part of Lion (Literature Online).
ABELL includes the period 1920 to 1955, and it covers monographs, periodical articles, critical editions of literary works, book reviews, collections of essays, and doctoral dissertations. According to the company, ABELL's inclusion of book reviews and critical editions provides a deeper coverage than any other bibliography, making it indispensable for detailed research.
Evan Ira Farber, librarian emeritus of Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, said: "It is very welcome news that Chadwyck-Healey is putting into electronic form the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature. It is a reference tool I have long depended upon. ... There is no question in my mind that every academic library supporting serious undergraduate work--and certainly graduate work--in English or American literature should make both ABELL and MLAIB (Modem Language Association International Bibliography) available to users."
The electronic version of ABELL enables you to search three-quarters of a century of scholarship in moments, according to the company. …
