The Top Producers of Native American Graduates

Each year, Diverse publishes a list of the Top 100 producers of associate, bachelor's and graduate degrees awarded to minority students.

This year, we continue with the expanded listings focusing on bachelor's and master's degrees awarded to Native American students, in line with the Native American Heritage Month focus of this edition of Diverse based on research conducted by Dr. Rhonda V. Sharpe.

Data for this analysis are included within the completions survey of the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics' Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Set. This analysis is based on degrees conferred during the 2016-17 academic year.

All colleges and universities must now ask students if they are Native American. Any U.S. citizen or permanent resident who responds "yes" to this question is categorized as Native American regardless of racial identification. Anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident is considered a "non-resident alien." All other individuals are categorized according to their answer to a second question in which they are presented with five standard racial classifications: American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian American, Black or African-American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and White and asked to "check all that apply." Anyone who checks off more than one category is placed in a new "two or more race" category.
