What to Steal from Your Man's Washbag; Their Products Can Be Cheaper - and Just as Effective!

Byline: TESSA CUNNINGHAM

THOUGHT that your man's washbag contained nothing more exciting than a half-used bar of Lifebuoy soap and a manky razor? It may be time to think again.

Beauty companies are falling over themselves to target men with cleansers, serums, moisturisers and masks. And that's great news for women.

For while these creams and lotions may be packaged to appeal to men, most contain almost identical ingredients to women's and are just as good for our skin. And as it's still an emerging market they are much cheaper.

'A lot of the products are basically the same.

Companies just tweak them slightly for men,' says cosmetic dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting, who has a unisex skincare range. So is it time to raid your man's washbag? Femail looks at the products that are just begging to be borrowed... or stolen.

CLEANSER Men-U Healthy Facial Wash PS7.99/100ml fragrancedirect.co.uk ONE pump and I get a light foam which I massage all over my face. There's a heady whiff of tea tree oil and, while my face feels squeaky clean, I'm left with two huge panda eyes. The high concentration of tea tree oil and witch hazel means that, unlike my normal cleanser, this is too astringent near the eyes. No problem for most men. But useless to whip off mascara.

VERDICT: 6/10 -BORROW

MASK Men-U D-TOX Deep Clean Clay Mask PS17.45/100ml, men-u.com YOU get up to 30 applications from this little tube. At 50p a go, it's a bargain. It dries super quickly and, when I wash it off after 15 minutes my skin looks brighter. Dr Patterson says: 'The clay absorbs excess oils and the witch hazel will cleanse the pores. But, as with all masks, don't be tempted to use more than twice a week.' VERDICT: 9/10 -STEAL

TONER Matt Skin Refresh Gel Toner, PS15.95/100ml, amazon.co.uk I LIKE this sharp smelling 'antishine' gel, which, based around cleansing witch hazel and salicylic acid, acts as an exfoliant. It's great value with up to 120 applications! Dr Patterson warns: 'Using this on top of a cleanser that also contains witch hazel increases the risk of skin irritation.' VERDICT: 8/10 -STEAL

BODY LOTION Nivea Men All Purpose Cream, PS1.75/75ml, boots.com THIS multi-tasker works well on dry hands, but it's so thick there's no way I'd use it as an everyday moisturiser. It feels like I'm lathering up for an Atlantic swim. Dr Bunting agrees: 'The skin on your palms is the thickest on your body so products made for your hands can't work properly on your face. …
