PRINTING and Publishing represents an enormous industry sector and is the fourth largest industry in the world.

It encompasses a broad range of activities with Multinational conglomerates and one-person ventures providing a huge diversity of products and services.

New technology is bringing change at an ever accelerating pace particularly in the field of computers and communications.

As a result of this digital revolution the structure of the industry is changing to accommodate the fact that printing is no longer the only way to disseminate information in a permanent form.

This is a fundamental shift in position as printers now have to compete with alternative media and new entrants using different technologies.

Information technology, and the consequent digital revolution is the major driver for change across the industry and printing is moving from being a relatively well defined industry in its own right to one that is a part of the converging telecommunications and information industry.

In that wider industry successful smaller companies will be part of networked alliances and larger companies will be complete communication providers to their customers.

The challenges we face are great but the opportunities even greater. Perhaps by 2004 the term "Printing Industry", as historically defined, will be meaningless.

THE HISTORY of T H Jordan Ltd has indeed been one of the Phoenix arising from the ashes.

One of Northern Ireland's oldest and renowned printing firms, the family-run business was set up in 1896 In Church Lane, Belfast, later moving to Millar Street.

Today, despite the premises being destroyed in 1995 and 1998 by fires, total refurbishment and upgrading of damaged plant means that the company is well prepared for the future.

The company ethos of quality work at a competitive price has ensured that T H Jordan has retained its reputation despite these vicissitudes.

Managing Director Ronnie Wilson who joined the company in 1981 as an apprentice and now owner comments:

THE GROWTH and development of print technology has meant that production is a much faster process than it was, which means turn round times have been greatly reduced.

This means that a fast response from those companies which enhance the printing process is vital - which is where Belfast Print Finishers comes in.

Situated in the heart of Belfast at Townsend Street, the size of a print run is not necessarily relevant for this company which specialises in a range of finishes - lamination, cutting and creasing, and automated folding and glueing.

The company which was set up in 1996 and was the first trade lamination service in Northern Ireland, has invested in state-of-the-art technology to ensure a product of the highest quality at a competitive price.
