COUNT 'EM OUT; Last Ditch Bid to Stop Womens' Boxing Match
Cameron, Stuart, The Mirror (London, England)
DOCTORS and church leaders have made a last ditch bid to stop Scotland's first women's boxing match.
Beautician Lourdes McDermott, 26, is due to fight Welsh 18-year-old Marie Leefe at the Dunblane Hydro Hotel tonight.
But Brian Keighley of the British Medical Association in Scotland called for it to be stopped.
He said: "What worries us is that those participating are mostly of child-bearing age and there is the possibility of an unknown pregnancy at the time of the fight.
"There are also certain anatomical features that make body blows more difficult for females.
"The health risks for boxing are significant whoever is fighting and we are concerned about the risk of head and brain injuries."
Scottish Catholic Church spokesman Father Tom Connolly added: "This fight should not go ahead.
"I think it is wrong but we are not in a position to stop it as it is a free country.
"I would strongly urge that it should not go ahead and I think the powers- that-be should stop it.
"I am certainly against boxing and, for women, it is most unladylike.
"This type of sport really does nothing for anybody. …
