Actually, this year there has been significant progress in what is known as continuous speech recognition (CSR) by computers, and two commercial software packages were launched within the last few months which convert users' speech into text. Importantly , with these products - ViaVoice from IBM and Dragon Systems' NaturallySpeaking - you don't have to speak much slower than normal nor do you have to separate your words artificially. Before now software used discrete voice recognition, where you hadto l eave a gap between each word, but this was highly unnatural, and would not have had great market acceptability.
The move from discrete to continuous recognition marks a major breakthrough, and speech recognition is set to turn into a major new market opportunity. It will be a standard feature on PCs before too long, so we'll all be talking to our computers. …
