Executive Changes: AMEX Names Gordon Smith to Customer Service Post

American Express Travel Related Services Co. in New York has promoted Gordon Smith to executive vice president of U.S. service delivery.

He will be in charge of customer service operations for U.S. card-related business and will report to Alfred J. Kelly, Jr., president of the consumer card services group.

Mr. Smith was senior vice president in charge of the Phoenix service center. He joined the company 25 years ago. In his new job he succeeded Steve Grant, who left American Express.

NEW ENGLAND

Mellon Financial Corp. has hired Steven J. Haskell as one of the Boston estate settlement managers in its Mellon Private Asset Management.

He was also named a vice president.

Mr. Haskell came from FleetBoston Financial Corp., where he was an executive account manager and team leader in the estate settlement group. He had worked at BankBoston before Fleet bought it in October. He has 21 years of wealth-management experience.

Mellon Financial is based in Pittsburgh and has $480 billion of assets under management.

State Street Research and Management Co. in Boston has put senior vice president Kevin Wilkins in charge of client service and named him to its management committee.

He remains the head of retail and marketing operations. In the client-service job he succeeded Troy Shaver, who has left the MetLife Inc. …
