Kids Literature Program in Dire Shortage of Books

The Junior Great Books program, where elementary school students learn about classic literature, needs books.
Des Plaines Elementary District 62 board member Joann Braam, who heads the program, said it currently is in place at eight of the system's schools.
It needs books so the students can read along with the adult volunteer facilitators.
"We're bursting at the seams. We have so many kids we can't serve because we need books," she said.
Those who are interested in helping the program financially or in other ways are encouraged to contact Braam at (847) 824-0700.
The program also needs books for the students, she said.
Under the program, the children read a short story from world literature in an after-school, small group setting and then discuss what they've read.
Braam said so far up to 12 volunteers are helping to conduct those small groups at the schools.
At Algonquin Middle School, the program features students and their parents reading such classics and then discussing them. …
