Students Contemplate America's Past, Future
The topic this year was "An Obituary for George Washington: 1732-1799" for the Daughters of the American Revolution's annual American History Essay Contest.
The contest, open to students in fifth through eighth grades, required students to focus on two aspects of Washington's life, areas such as statesman, political figure and agriculturist.
Winners for the eighth grade are Gene Lowry of Hadley Junior High School in first place, Alexandra Tauchman in second place and Brittany Cadwalader in third place. The girls are both from Glen Crest Middle School in Glen Ellyn.
Seventh-grade winners were Corey Barenbrugge, first place, Hadley; Kathryn Ciesemier, second place, Glen Crest; and Kelly Crowley, third place, Holy Ghost.
The contest was sponsored by social studies teachers Mike Miele at Hadle; Al Unger, Marianne Cratz and Pat Doyle at Glen Crest; and Kathy Doherty at Holy Ghost Catholic School in Addison.
Winnie Ristau of Lombard, a member of the Anan Harmon DAR Chapter, was chairwoman of the essay contest. …
