Elgin Police Arrest Suspect in Jewelry Store Robbery
Cliatt, Cass, Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL)
A second man suspected in connection with the armed robbery last month of Elgin Jewelers was in custody Friday, being held on $500,000 bond, police said.
A tip from a passerby helped detectives from the Elgin Police Major Investigations Division and North Central Narcotics Task Force track down Daniel Sanchez-Mendez, 25, Tuesday at his home at 225 College St., Apt. 3, Elgin, said Master Sgt. Ralph Stegall of the North Central Narcotics Task Force.
Police think Sanchez-Mendez was one of up to three people who helped rob the jewelry store at 11 N. State St. at gun point Dec. 20.
Witnesses said two men waited inside the store for customers to leave around 7 p.m. before announcing a robbery and smashing several glass display cases, reports showed.
The robbers got away with numerous rings and bracelets. Within minutes of the robbery, the North Central Narcotics Task Force got a tip that eventually led police to Sanchez-Mendez, Stegall said. …
