Fontana, Richards Lead Hustle to Third Straight AAU State Crown
The Illinois Hustle 16-and-under AAU girls basketball team, featuring nine players from Daily Herald area schools, won its third consecutive state title.
Led by captains Maggie Fontana of Fremd and Lindsay Richards of Barrington, the Hustle went 3-0 in the state tourney and won their games by an average of 16.3 points.
Fontana averaged 20 points and Richards averaged 14.5 a game.
The Hustle had to win the tourney to make their third consecutive trip to the AAU national tournament July 7-15 in Chattanooga, Tenn. They were third last year and fourth two years ago.
"I think they're starting to get focused," said Hustle coach Jim Russo.
"It's a tough year for the kids with so much college recruiting going on and so much pressure on them academically. But I think they're starting to play up to form."
Rachel Karos and Ashley Rook (Naperville North), Natalie Desmaretz (Benet), Maggie Flaherty (Maine West), Katie Herman (Lake Park), Elizabeth Marcellus (York) and Morgan Kasperek (Hinsdale Central) are the other area girls on the roster. …
