School Security Guards Mobilized for Class Opening; Will Be Deputized for Traffic Duty

School security guards have been authorized by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to direct traffic and apprehend traffic violators within their jurisdiction in campuses in Metro Manila when classes begin tomorrow, June 5, reports reaching the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports (DECS) Central Office in Pasig City said yesterday.

The MMDA is tapping security personnel of private schools, colleges, and universities in Metro Manila to help manage traffic in line with its "Oplan: Balik Paaralan 2000."

MMDA Chairman Jejomar Binay said the MMDA will train and deputize the security guards in time for the school opening on June 5, 13, and 19. They will coordinate with the Philippine National Association of School Security Organization (Philnasso) and the Metro Manila Association of School Security Organization (MASSO).

School representatives have been meeting with MMDA to coordinate its traffic management plan, which includes strict enforcement of rules on illegal parking and loading and unloading.

Security personnel of the schools will also be trained in monitoring overall traffic flow in various parts of Metro Manila and feed traffic situationers to the MMDA Metro Base monitoring center for dissemination to the public.

MMDA has coordinated its traffic management plans with the DECS, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), San Beda College (SBC), De Ocampo Memorial College (DOMC), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), Miriam College (MC), University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman, Letran College (LC), Poveda Learning Center (PLC), and San Sebastian College (SSC).

MMDA is appealing to schools in Metro Manila to duplicate Ateneo's "Project Blue Sky" as part of their contribution to help improve air quality in Metro Manila, especially in campuses. Under the plan, all vehicles seeking a gate pass to enter ADMU campus must undergo emission testing. …
