The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has entered into a covenant with 12 other government agencies for an intensified campaign against trafficking, including the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of members of human smuggling syndicates.
Immigration Commissioner Rufus Rodriguez said a memorandum of agreement was signed by representatives of 13 government agencies to establish a multilateral effort in combating the activities of the syndicates.
Rodriguez said the project is in line with an agreement the Philippines entered into with the United Nations Center for International Crime Prevention which is implementing a pilot program dubbed "Global Program against Trafficking in Human Beings in the Philippines."
The other agencies involved in the project are the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Interior and Local Government, the National Police Commission, the Department of Justice, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Labor and Employment, the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and the Philippine Public Safety College.
Rodriguez said the project was launched because human trafficking is now considered a major transnational c rime affecting not only the Philippines but other countries in Asia, Europe and North America as well. …
