INFORMS, KORMS Meet Helps Promote Information, Knowledge Management
A massive international conference on ways to promote information and knowledge management in the 21st century was recently held at the Convention & Exhibition Center (COEX) in southern Seoul.
Some 1,200 scholars and experts, including 600 from overseas, engaged in a three-day session to discuss operations research and management science, and took part in exhibitions of related state-of-the-art equipment and handsets.
The conference was jointly organized by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) of the United States and Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society (KORMS).
Participants presented keynote speeches, papers and tutorials, and participated in plenary sessions and workshops.
The international conference helped participants share knowledge on operations research and knowledge management, which have emerged as the key factors in promoting enterprise competitiveness in the 21st century.
``INFORMS-KORMS Seoul 2000 served as a precious chance to enhance the operations research and management science in Korea. It has also helped other foreign participants to exchange information and knowledge,'' said a participant.
Tcha Dong-wan, general co-chair of the international meeting, also said,``The conference was one of the biggest international academic meetings ever held in Korea and helped work out the direction Korea's economy should take in the internet era.''
``It offered a chance to meet with leading professionals from around the globe, and not only be informed about the latest developments, but also share ideas in such areas as e-business, supply chain management, etc,'' he said.
About 780 papers by authors from over 50 countries were presented, far exceeding the expectations made in the planning stage. This is in part owing to the large turnout from the East Asian economy, which has rapidly recovered from its recent financial crisis.
The conference is also the first major one at the newly completed ASEM convention center.
INFORMS was created in January, 1995 through the merger of the Institute of Management Sciences (IMS) and the Operations Research Society of America (ORSA), both of which had been in existence for more than 40 years. INFORMS' diverse membership base includes academics and practitioners from around the world, enabling both segments of the profession to interact with and learn from one another.
KORMS is the professional organization in Korea for individuals and organizations interested in operations research (OR) or management science (MS). …
