Convict 'Misdiagnosed' as a Pedophile, Defense Says
Gordon, Tony, Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL)
Convicted child molester William Allen is a pedophile who will repeat his crimes if released into society without treatment, a psychologist testified Wednesday.
But Allen's defense attorney, Lake County Public Defender David Brodsky, countered that his client does not fit the classic pedophile profile and has been misdiagnosed.
A jury of eight women and four men is being asked to decide if Allen, 44, formerly of 344 Indian Ridge Trail in Wauconda Township, is a sexually violent person who should be confined indefinitely for sex offender treatment.
Agnes Jonas, a Department of Corrections psychologist who recommended Allen be confined, said Wednesday that Allen suffers from the mental disorder pedophilia and is likely to molest other children unless he undergoes treatment.
Allen, who was convicted of molesting a 7-year-old girl in 1990 and an 11-year-old girl in 1993, was in sex offender treatment programs after both convictions and failed to complete either one, Jonas said.
"His failures in treatment programs, coupled with his evasive responses to questions about his sexual past, are significant indicators of pedophilia," Jonas said. "Without the benefit of a treatment program, I believe he is quite likely to commit other crimes."
But Brodsky said there are many aspects of Allen's history and psychological makeup that do not fit the diagnosis of pedophilia, and the state has no right to continue to confine him. …
