BIOSIS Has Connections!!
Connections to meetings, books, patents, reference citations, current life science journal articles, and serial sources for the BIOSIS database. These "connections" are all packaged into an innovative new user friendly online service, aptly named "The BIOSIS Connection."
The service, offered by BioSciences Information Service (BIOSIS) is designed for the life science researcher and provides low priced access to a growing variety of databases. According to Arthur W. Elias, director of marketing and distribution for BIOSIS, two years of preparation went into the BIOSIS Connection before it was launched on May 2, 1988. Elias was quick to point out that the BIOSIS Connection does not compete with any of their other services now available on Dialog, BRS or any of the other online services.
The variety of databases and services provided by the BIOSIS Connection are designed to support specific research and communication needs.
Users are finding BioExpress, a new fast route to access life science research information, to be especially convenient. It contains 12 weeks of reference citations to journal articles appearing in the life science literature. The database is updated weekly and is one of the fastest routes to accessing life science research data. Citations include such information as the article title, journal and author information and language of the document.
BioMeetings contains hard-to-find references to life science research findings presented at meetings, symposia, seminars and conferences and is updated monthly.
BioBooks, is a database of recently published books dealing with the life sciences. Book synopses, publication information such as publisher address and author(s) name and individual chapter references, when appropriate, are included. BioBooks is updated monthly.
BioPatents is an 18 month file containing references to recently granted U.S. Patents in biotechnology, biomedicine, agriculture, and food technology. Updated on a semimonthly basis, citations will provide such information as the patent number, the inventor, the date the patent was granted, assignee and bibliographic information.
Serial Sources for the BIOSIS Database is a complete list of all source materials of a serial nature monitored by BIOSIS which includes information such as the serial title, CODEN, frequency and publisher address. Containing approximately 17,000 entries, Serial Sources provides the user with access to the more than 9,000 active and 6,000 archival titles monitored by BIOSIS. Serial Sources is updated semiannually.
Forthcoming Events features announcements of upcoming meetings, seminars, workshops and special events of interest to life scientists. It includes information on registration, dates, location and subject area. Updates are made monthly.
Other databases are currently under development for inclusion in the BIOSIS Connection such as the AIDS Database, Jobline, BioTheses and Forthcoming Publications.
BIOSIS is also actively seeking candidate databases, of scientific value, from organizations and or individuals that merit inclusion in the service. …
