President Kim Stresses on Minimizing Adverse Effects of Globalization
President Kim Dae-jung yesterday appealed to Asian and European leaders to make efforts to minimize the adverse effects of globalization.
At the closing of the two-day summit of the inter-continental leaders in Seoul, the president said the Seoul ASEM was able to produce many fruitful and solid results.
``Over the past two days, Asia and Europe have taken a major step forward in their march to forge a genuine partnership for prosperity and stability in the new millennium. Leaders of the ASEM membership have exchanged views sincerely and candidly and come to the following agreements,'' the chairman of the Seoul ASEM said in the press conference at the Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX) in southern Seoul.
He said the Seoul meeting had adopted the ``Asia-Europe Cooperation Framework 2000.'' The Cooperation Framework is a basic document envisioning the medium and long-range agenda for Asia-Europe cooperation and the development of ASEM.
``Both in name and substance, it has established itself as the central medium of intercontinental collaboration. When the principles and objectives contained in the Cooperation Framework are carried out one by one, the common prosperity of the two regions will make smooth progress,'' said the winner of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize.
Kim also cited the adoption of the ``Seoul Declaration for Peace on the Korean Peninsula.''
He said leaders of the member nations of the ASEM totally concurred that peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula would lead to a better security environment in the Northeast Asian region and the world. ``They also welcomed the budding of peace and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula and actively supported the efforts of both South and North Korea. The member nations also agreed to exert added efforts to improve relations with North Korea both on an individual and multilateral basis,'' he said.
Kim stressed that the participants in the Seoul meeting agreed to construct the ``Trans-Eurasia Information Network'' befitting the new age of knowledge and information. …
