Des Plaines 8th Ward alderman today will host 'Friendly Forum'

Des Plaines 8th Ward Alderman Joyce E. Petersen will host a "Friendly Forum" at 7aep.m. today at the Friendship Park Conservatory to meet officials from the new St. Sophia Orthodox Church on Oakton Street. Another issue to be discussed is the street resurfacing project for Dover Lane. Representatives from the library and the park district will also be on hand to answer questions. The meeting will be held at the Friendship Park Conservatory, 395 Algonquin Road, Des Plaines.

Maine East High School offers a new $1,000 scholarship

Maine Township High School District 207 officials have approved a $1,000 scholarship for a senior who graduates from Maine East High School. The scholarship, offered by Maine East alum Scott Bloomberg, will be awarded to a senior who has a 2.5 grade point average, will attend a 2-year or 4-year college next fall and completes an essay and has a recommendation from a school employee (a teacher, coach, administrator or other worker). Alexian Brothers to offer free asthma workshop Thursday

Alexian Brothers Medical Center hosts a free asthma workshop Thursday. The class is open to the public at 7 p.m. at the hospital, 800 Biesterfield Road in Elk Grove Village. A registered pharmacist and a certified respiratory therapist will teach how to better manage and control asthma. Participants will learn to recognize common asthma triggers and early warning signs. Puppets present holiday magic of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker

The music and brilliance of Tchaikovsky will come alive in an unusual way in Arlington Heights this holiday season. Northwest Suburban High School District 214 Community Education will present a puppet version of "The Nutcracker" at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The ballet will be performed with more than 40 marionettes, hand and rod puppets by Franceska's Marionette Theater. The group is a touring puppet theater complete with a stage and scenery. …
