Fitness Testing Company Puts Its Focus on Fat Measurement

Kelly Altom stresses that avid exercisers should follow their fat loss and not their weight loss.
Altom, owner of Goldstandard Systems based in Hoffman Estates, operates what he calls an elite fitness testing business allowing his clients to measure fat.
Altom brings a hydrostatic weighing technique to local health and country clubs. The scale, used in water, includes every important facet of determining accurate measurements of body composition, he said.
The technique's greatest benefit, Altom added, is its ability to monitor changes in body composition due to exercise and nutritional habits.
In the past, the testing equipment mainly was used in research laboratories and for professional athletes. Altom wants to make such fitness testing available to people looking to live a healthier lifestyle.
The system makes it easier to calculate a person's density and body fat can then be calculated, he said.
In addition to the fitness fanatic, the system is also useful for people with health problems. Clients with high blood pressure, diabetes or eating disorders often benefit from the system.
The Wellness Center in Arlington Heights, Forest Grove Athletic Club in Palatine and the Pavilion in Elk Grove Village are among the clubs where customers can use the system. The cost is about $30 or $35 to use the machine.
Altom, 27, has been involved in the health and fitness field for more than nine years. …
