Board Debates Web Site Design Course

A new Web site design course, proposed for next year at Glenbard West High School, sparked debate this week among District 87 school board members.
The majority agreed students would benefit from learning the skills needed to place information on the World Wide Web.
"There's a tremendous need for this in industry," said Lois Hince, a board member from Carol Stream. "I'd love to see this (offered) at all the buildings."
"We would have individuals who would have marketable skills," agreed board member David Brown, a Lombard resident.
But others, including board President Joy Talsma of Glen Ellyn, expressed concern over what the class would replace.
Audris Griffith, assistant principal for instruction at the Glen Ellyn high school, said she couldn't predict which electives students will choose next year, no matter what's offered.
The course would be offered through the applied arts department, she said, and students who already take classes like computer-assisted design most likely would sign up for the new elective as well. …
