Mayor Says West Chicago Was Wrong to Try to Impose City Codes on Airport

West Chicago Mayor Steve Lakics admitted Monday the city made a mistake in requiring the DuPage Airport to comply with building code changes for the rest of the city.
At the city council meeting Monday night, Lakics said he has written a letter to airport board Chairman Joseph Kindlon explaining the error.
Lakics said city staff changes and miscommunications with airport officials led the city to mistakenly issue new building codes that would affect the airport without the airport's agreement, which is necessary.
A 1994 annexation agreement between the two agencies states that airport building codes can only be changed with the consent of the airport and the city.
"We expect them to abide by the agreement and we definitely will as well," Lakics said.
The DuPage Airport recently threaten to deannex the airport from the city after hearing from city staff members that a planned 30,000-square-foot hangar did not meet new building codes adopted by the city over the summer.
