Business Owners Now Facing New Risk - Criminal Liability Power Breakfast Also Will Discuss Workplace Violence

Most businesses try to protect themselves from every possible risk by purchasing fire and flood insurance. But now there's a new type of risk that businesses must begin coping with - criminal liability.
An in-depth look at what constitutes corporate criminal liability, as well as advice on how business owners can protect themselves, will be the focus of the Lake County Power Breakfast Oct. 6.
Leading the discussion will be a panel of legal and insurance experts, Lake County State's Attorney Mike Waller, former U.S. Attorney Fred Foreman and Vernon Hills Village President Roger Byrne.
The breakfast is open to the public and will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Midlane Golf Resort in Wadsworth.
"We will examine the risks businesses face with this new issue of criminal liability, which has been an outgrowth of recent court cases," said Hal Coxon, moderator for the panel discussion.
A criminal suit recently was filed in the ValuJet crash case in Florida, alleging criminal negligence, and this has ramifications for other businesses in terms of vulnerability to criminal suits, Coxon said. …
