Hospitals Working to Join Management, Control Costs

Although several months away from being official, steps are being taken toward finalizing a joint operating agreement that will combine the services of two Waukegan hospitals.
A public hearing will be held tonight on the deal between Provena Saint Therese Medical Center and Victory Memorial Hospital, which both serve the northern part of Lake County.
The hearing will start at 7 p.m. at the Ramada Inn in Waukegan.
By combining resources of the two hospitals, the union is expected to save the hospitals millions of dollars while also improving services.
Once final, a separate governing board of directors will manage the operations of Provena Saint Therese, the only Roman Catholic hospital in Lake County, and Victory, the oldest hospital in the county.
"It's not a completed deal. This is just another step in the process," said Tim Harrington, chief executive officer at Victory Hospital. "There's a number of steps we need to take before this is something we can sign."
But hospital officials are quick to point out the joint agreement is not a merger.
