Insurance Coverage to Go Up County OKs $50 Million Excess Liability Package

As a result of a criminal lawsuit involving seven DuPage County law enforcement officials, the county is purchasing insurance to cover any future cases.
The insurance coverage is part of a $50 million excess liability package approved Tuesday by the county board.
"We made sure this is in our insurance now," County Administrator Donald Zeilenga said.
County officials are looking for additional insurance to cover a $1 million deductible on the defense costs.
Under the insurance plan, the coverage pays for the criminal defense of a county employee at the discretion of the insurance company once the first $1 million is paid.
The company would take under consideration whether the county approved payment of the first million and would expect to be paid back if the person was found guilty, said George Kouba, finance director for the county.
"It's the call of the insurance company based on the call of the county board," he said.
The insurance policy also offers $50 million in coverage for excess liability including civil rights cases, law enforcement cases and auto liabilities, Kouba said. It also covers the forest preserve.
Before, the county had $10 million in excess liability coverage.
Because the insurance market is offering low prices for coverage, DuPage officials decided to take advantage of it, Kouba said. …
