Students 'Soaring to Success' Program Offers Mix of Learning, Fun

Nine-year-old Lauren Spratt had fun in school this summer.
The Wheeling girl, who is entering fourth grade at Mark Twain Elementary School in Wheeling, enjoyed the time she spent in the school's Soaring To Success program.
"We get to do fun activities. We get to go bowling with the teachers and stuff," Spratt said.
For Linda Levey, a Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 special education teacher who has run the program for six years, Spratt's assessment reflects what Soaring To Success is about.
"We work on basic skills and make it fun," said Levey, who is working with teacher's aide Kristen Sauber this summer.
The 10-day summer program includes reviews of vocabulary, math, reading and writing for first- through third-grade students.
The program also includes work for the students on their organizational and independent work skills, organizers said.
In addition to the work on academic disciplines, the students have been involved in other projects such as making windsocks and taking field trips to places such as a local McDonald's restaurant. …
