U-46 Courses Getting Technical District Seeks Better Image, Offerings for Vocational Education

A day before they welcomed students back, vocational education teachers in Elgin Area Unit District 46 learned about several changes they hope will make their classes - and their image - better.
Vocational education courses at the district's four high schools have been getting stronger, but by the end of last spring, teachers felt the offerings could improve even more, said Ellie MacKinney, director of career and technical education.
After a summer of study, the result is a four-pronged approach that includes:
- A new program designed to help students who struggle with reading.
- Surveying graduates about the quality of the program and new, hands-on ways to test students' knowledge.
- A marketing plan addressing the program's image.
- More job shadowing, internships and other in-the-field experiences designed to give students the skills they will need after high school.
