CHARLESTON - Kristen Pace from Warren made her first-round jumps in the high jump look simple here Friday at O'Brien Stadium.
That performance set the stage for a very workmanlike day in the field events for Lake County's best in the girls track state meet.
Pace cleared all three of her heights - 5-3, 5-4 and 5-5 - on the first attempt and is again in the top position for the finals.
She achieved all this despite a sore leg - coupled with the event being moved indoors due to heavy rains.
"My high jump went real well despite it being indoors," she said. "I was totally calm, and now I'm No. 1 so far."
She also competed in the long jump but was unable to muster the same jump she had at last week's Stevenson sectional. Her best jump of 16-5 1/4 was only good enough for 21st place.
"I was real nervous because this was so new for me," she said, "and I didn't know what to expect in this event."
When Pace starts the high jumps today, she will find herself tied with seven other girls at the 5-5 height. One of the girls, Jamie Tyler of O'Fallon, placed ahead of Pace at last year's meet. Pace placed third and Tyler second at the 1997 state meet.
Unfortunately for the Lake County faithful, the good fortune stopped with the rain. …
