Bartlett Trustees Offer Compromise for Developing Controversial Area

To the dismay of neighbors, Bartlett trustees are preparing to designate part of Army Trail Road for commercial development in the village's land-use plan.
The stretch of Army Trail Road, between Petersdorf Road and Route 59, also known as "Area H," has been the subject of controversy for five months.
Nearby homeowners want Area H to remain open or become developed with single-family homes. Most village officials, however, believe the land would be better used for commercial development.
"This has turned out to be the most problematic pieces of property in the village, in terms of future use," said village President Catherine Melchert.
This week trustees endorsed a plan that would change the land's use from entirely residential to a mixture of open space, commercial and residential development. A formal vote is expected later this month.
"We have somewhat of a compromise here," Melchert said. "While it doesn't give either party all of what it wants, it gives each something of what they were looking for. …
