Hoffman Knocks off Barrington

Byline: Daily Herald Reports

The game plan worked the way coach Bill Wandro anticipated it had to for Hoffman Estates to beat visiting Barrington 58-52 for the regional championship Friday.

The fourth-seeded Hawks (19-9) advanced to Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. sectional semifinal at Hersey against top seed Elgin (27-1), a 58-43 winner over Schaumburg.

"We had to get to the free throw line and cause turnovers because that is how we won the last time (60-50 earlier in the season)," Wandro said.

The Hawks reached the line 35 times and made 22 of them. No. 12 Barrington to went 10-for-15.

Hoffman Estates forced 22 turnovers while committing just 10.

But sensational 8-for-8 3-point shooting by the Broncos (12-16) kept them in contention nearly to the end. They had to play half the game without all-Mid-Suburban League junior point guard Todd Moser, who faced foul trouble from the first quarter, and lost him and three others on personals in the fourth quarter.

"We took the ball to the basket," Wandro said.

The Hawks trailed 39-38 entering the final quarter after Frank Favia (10 points, two 3s) hit his second shot from beyond the arc with :29 left in the third. But they took the lead for good on a 7-0 run that ended with a free throw by all-MSL senior forward Chris Sigl, who drew the fifth foul by Moser with 3:52 left in the game.

The Hawks scored all of their points on return trips after forcing turnovers. Jeff Schilling started the run with a 3-pointer, and Sigl hit another free throw and a basket for the other points.

The Broncos trimmed the lead to a single point by scoring 4 consecutive free throws, 2 each by Tom Spicer and Jess Sayre, on their next two possessions. The Hawks went on another 5-0 streak started by a Sigl basket.

The Hawks hit 13 of 19 free throws in the final quarter. Ty Holmes hit 5 of 6 and Schilling 4 of 6.

Despite sitting out all of the second quarter after picking up 3 fouls in the first quarter and much of the third, Moser finished the game as high scorer for the Broncos with 11 points. He hit three 3s, Brandon Watts made two and Sayre hit one.

"The kids had some good shots, and we are a good shooting team," said coach Mike Obsuszt. …
