Audit Finds School District's Policies Need to Be Updated

A legal assessment done by the Lake Zurich school district's new law firm is raising several policy and personnel questions.
Attorney Lawrence Weiner said he cited 18 district policies or procedures that need revision or should be "more fully developed," to comply with state and federal law. He also found five instances of administrators who were not properly certified for their jobs.
Weiner noted the policy findings were similar to problems found in other districts his firm has audited.
What is unusual, he said, was finding two assistant principals and three principals not properly certified to hold their jobs.
However, Superintendent Edward Cox said each administrator has proper certification or is awaiting transfer of certification from another state.
"All of our principals are certified and have advanced degrees in administration," Cox said.
Some of the policies that Weiner said were deficient involve sexual harassment proceedings, the Freedom of Information Act, special education services and retention and promotion of students. …
