U-46 Reviews Programs for At-Risk Student Literacy

Without realizing it, Mary Enck has lived a hard-knock life.
Her father died when she was 3 and she grew up in a single-parent family that didn't have a car, television or much money.
"I was at-risk, but I guess I didn't know," said Enck, the director of early childhood initiatives for Elgin Area Unit District 46.
Being successful at school, however, was what helped Enck along on the right path.
"There's one or two things that can happen to make school more successful for children and their families and that's what our programs" are trying to do.
"The goal is to turn children into lifelong learners and it's critical for at-risk children to start these programs early," Enck said to the U-46 Citizens' Advisory Council at-risk committee Wednesday night.
Committee members, made up of U-46 residents, are attempting to identify and offer solutions to some of the potential problems for students who are most susceptible to dropping out. …
