Speech Events Make Kids More Vocal

Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst sponsors an activity that is just as competitive as any sports event, but doesn't require as much physical ability.
Speech is a seasonal activity which has the same makeup of every Illinois High School Association sport/activity, with regional, sectional and state competition.
There are 13 events in speech centered around formal speaking, oral interpretation or acting.
Father Gerald Riva helped to reinstate the speech team at Immaculate Conception High School. The activity had remained dormant for a number of years.
"I have a bunch of students this year who would benefit from the opportunity of competing in the areas of speech and oral interpretation," Riva said.
All of the team members volunteered for the activity and represent every high school level. Junior Christi Thompson joined the team because she hopes to be a theater major in college.
Thompson and Immaculate Conception's speech team captain Martin Stenson compete together in humorous duet acting, performing a scene from "Guys and Dolls," a play Riva directed and produced last spring.
Thompson also competes in dramatic interpretation, in which she must portray three characters in a scene.
Like Stenson, junior Steve Cothard competes in original comedy. …
