Official Word on COD Community College Is Largest Single-Campus School in Nation

What institution of higher education has the largest number of undergraduates in Illinois?
Well, it's not one of the ones whose name is on the bumper stickers that begin "My daughter and my money go to ..."
It's close to home: the College of DuPage.
Although it's a two-year community college, COD boasted a for-credit course enrollment of 29,698 students last year.
That is thousands more than the University of Illinois and the other big state universities.
In fact, COD's student body outnumbers that of any other single-campus community college in the nation, according to preliminary figures released by the U.S. Department of Education.
When the Glen Ellyn school is compared to all community colleges, single- or multi-campus, it ranks fifth in the United States.
Miami-Dade, with campuses throughout Dade County in Florida crams in 48,795 students, the largest in the country.
COD's top-dog status has been informally tabbed by the college for two years. The official numbers came as no surprise to school administrators.
College spokesman Bill Troller said COD's ranking, while appreciated, was probably not of any great public relations value.
"I don't know if it's that great of a promotional thing, but I think it's nice. Some students have told me they're proud," Troller said.
What's important about being No. 1, according to COD President Michael Murphy, is it is a "a measure of our being responsive" to residents of COD's district.
