Lake Zurich Board Divided on Allowing Brick, Stone Mailboxes

One last fight was waged this week over a Lake Zurich ordinance addressing permanent parkway structures like stone and brick mailboxes.
Trustee Stephen J. McAvoy said the village should pay the cost of repairing any such structure damaged by village vehicles in the course of work.
"In the event these mailboxes should be replaced, (it should be done) with in-kind and like quality," McAvoy said.
The village recently approved an ordinance prohibiting construction of new stone or brick mailboxes and other parkway obstructions. However, the proposal will allow existing structures to remain unless they need to be replaced or there is a change in ownership.
The ordinance also extends to shrubbery, trees and boulders that affect visibility near intersections.
Trustee John Tolomei said it was not the village's responsibility to fix or replace the stone or brick mailboxes with the same structures.
"The village has never issued permits to build those in the right-of-way," Tolomei said. "We should replace them with a standard mail box and nothing with anything other than standard. …
