If you're into the finer arts, downtown Elgin is the place to be this weekend.
The city's fifth annual Fine Arts Festival opens up at 7:30 p.m. today with a concert by the Elgin Symphony Orchestra at the Wing Park band shell. The orchestra will perform show tunes and the "1812 Overture."
The rest of the weekend is filled with art shows, musical performances and children's entertainment, all at the Civic Center in downtown Elgin.
"It's a showcase for Elgin's art community," said city spokeswoman Helga Stafford. "It also gives our community a chance to purchase mid-priced art. It doesn't have the big price tag like the galleries in Chicago."
The festival's main attraction is a free concert by '70s folksters America at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Hemmens Cultural Center. The band is sure to perform the hits, including "Horse With No Name."
Paintings and sculpture also will be on display as part of the Elgin chapter of the American Association of University Women's 38th annual art showcase. …
