Wearable Art Attracting Followers from Fashion and Art Industries

Call it hip, call it funky, or just plain politically correct.

However you describe it, wearable art is the rage these days, and local art lovers have the inside track.

In fact, supporters of the Barrington Area Arts Council dig the trend so much, they wasted no time in scooping up tickets to the group's second annual spring fashion show, featuring wearable art right out of their current gallery exhibit.

The eclectic affair took place April 10 at Barrington Hills Country Club. The event sold out - 260 tickets in less than two weeks - and worked again to raise nearly $15,000 for more local cultural programming.

As far as the arts council and its patrons are concerned, a fashion show built around wearable art is a natural. But it took a veteran buyer from Macy's department store to pitch the idea.

Kathy Tipper of Barrington Hills was a women's wear buyer for more than 10 years, first with Macy's and later with Belk department stores in the south.

Consequently, she is savvy enough to know that not all women have a model figure, and not all women want to buy their clothes off the rack.

"These pieces are all one-of-a-kind, individually made by some of our local artists," said Tipper. "A show like this gets people thinking, and it's a good way to have fun. And that's what art is all about."

Tipper conceived the fashion show two years ago after taking in the regular April exhibit of wearable art in the council's gallery, located at 207 Park Ave. in downtown Barrington.

The current exhibit features more than 100 different pieces, from belts, jewelry and handbags to painted clothes and hand-woven jackets. …
