Travelers Go 3-1 in Cats Classic
The Wheaton Travelers 14-and-under softball team competed in the Swinging Cats Classic in West Chicago last weekend. The Travelers posted a 3-1 record with one game yet to be played.
The Travelers opened Saturday's pool play with a 9-6 win over the Palatine Panthers. Kelly Cosgrove pitched a complete game, striking out 3 and walking 5 over 6 innings. Stacie Frey scored 4 of the team's 9 runs by going 2 for 2 at the plate with 2 walks and 2 RBIs.
Katie Wiesbrook reached on an error in the first inning and later scored. Wiesbrook also recorded 7 putouts on defense. Sarah Kinsella went 1 for 3 with the bat with 1 RBI.
The Travelers started their second game of pool play in a misty rain that turned into a steady drizzle. The team had a hard time getting anything going offensively against the Plainfield Thunder, the eventual tournament champion.
Defensively the Travelers gave up 8 quick runs in the first inning and then shut down Plainfield after that. Amy Romberg kept the Travelers in the game with 3 key putouts in left field, Katie Compagno threw out a runner at home, and Brita Schmidt and Wiesbrook combined for a double play.
Sunday brought better weather but time constraints dictated that the Travelers' last game of pool play be canceled. Despite a tie for second in their pool with a 1-1 record, the Travelers fell into the consolation bracket because of one of the tie-breaking rules.
The Travelers faced Palatine in the quarterfinals and won 9-6. Kelly Cosgrove went the distance, striking out 5 over 4 innings of work. She also caught the last out of the game on a shot back to the pitcher.
Becky Gonzalez went 1 for 1 with 2 walks and scored once. Christie Stock and Romberg were both hit by pitches and each scored once. Meredith Schweitzer coaxed 2 walks and scored both times. …
