Counselors Have Ideas for Students' D's and F's

The grade reports for the first six weeks of school should be delivered this week to all parents of Lake Park students.
If D's and F's are part of that report, it might be the perfect time to "nip it in the bud." Grade Booster Night, sponsored by the Lake Park High School counselors, was designed to take a proactive approach toward less than satisfactory school performance. This program, which has been in effect at Lake Park since 1984, is scheduled from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at the east campus resource center, 600 S. Medinah Road.
The program is offered for parents of sophomores and freshmen and will feature counselors Mary O'Reilly, Larry Patrict, Chris Freuhling and Jeanne Miller.
"We did a survey a few years ago to find out if this program had any effect on students' progress," O'Reilly said. "The survey demonstrated that students whose parents participated in the program had fewer absences, fewer difficulties in discipline and grades improved overall.
"The focus of the program is on academic improvement. There will be additional hand-outs for parents regarding emotional and behavioral problems, drugs- and alcohol-related problems, but the Grade Booster Night is designed to give parents strategies directed at grade improvement. …
