Mundelein, Lake Park Invitationals Provide Good Early-Season Test

The 1996 boys cross country season is still very young, but some interesting match-ups are already taking place.
After taking second place Wednesday in a huge field at the Mundelein Invitational, Stevenson returns to action Saturday morning on the same course.
The runner-up Patriots will face an even tougher field this time around at the Lakewood Forest Preserve as the Wauconda Invite is run over the same 3-mile course.
"There will be 26 teams (at Wauconda), and it's actually a stronger field than (Mundelein) with Crystal Lake Central running there," said Stevenson coach Don Proft, whose team is 3-0 in the North Suburban Conference.
"We're real happy with Wednesday's meet because one of our guys couldn't run and another guy stepped up."
The majority of Libertyville's varsity team was not in attendance for the Mundelein Invite, but the Wildcats will be at full strength this weekend when they head south for the Peoria Woodruff Invite along with Hoffman Estates.
No. 1 runner Andrew Willgress will pace Libertyville at Detweiller Park while senior teammate Joe Rierden also returns to the lineup. …
