The first Minee-Subee Child Development Center in Arlington Heights is under construction. The 9,700-square-foot child-care center at 3523 N. Kennicott Ave. is due to be completed this fall.
The one-story building sits on a diamond-shaped, 60,000-square-foot lot, resulting in a series of "oddly shaped" spaces.
Architect Jeffrey R. Brown of Arlington Heights-based JRB Group Architects said the unusual shapes resulted in a creative site plan approach and building orientation. The outdoor playground uses some of those spaces to incorporate natural features at the site, such as trees with low-hanging branches.
Minee-Subee owners Norman and Judith Katz chose Krusinski Construction Co. of Westchester to construct the building. Krusinski said the lot's shape made the utility tie-in complicated. It also is working on an on-site underground storm-water retention system.
The building will have eight classrooms, a kitchen and supplementary spaces to hold about 150 children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old.
Brown described the center's character as "residential," adding the design provides maximum light and natural ventilation to each classroom. …
