Ameritech Brings Cable Competition to Suburbs

Laura Warren wasn't happy with her cable television service, but unlike most suburban residents, she could do something more than gripe.
Warren, a 33-year-old Glendale Heights homemaker, switched cable television providers.
After months of delay, cable competition has come to the suburbs for the first time, starting on the east side of Glendale Heights.
"I always said I would switch when competition came," Warren said. "When the guy came to the door, I thought why not?"
Ameritech has started selling its cable service to a small section of Glendale Heights and will eventually cover the entire town, competing against Time Warner, company spokesman Dave Onak said.
Within a few weeks, Ameritech will start selling cable service to a portion of Naperville. Onak could not provide any more details.
Over the next few years, more and more suburban residents may have a choice in cable companies as Ameritech works to sign agreements with such suburbs such as Arlington Heights, Glen Ellyn and Elgin.
Ameritech, which is selling cable service to towns in Michigan and Ohio, won't say how many people have signed up in Glendale Heights so far. …
