Hinsdale Central Loses More Than a Football Game to Lyons

Dan Spain just needed some room, that's all.
The Lyons running back and his backfield mates weren't getting any from a smothering Hinsdale Central defense, so when Spain fielded a Red Devils punt at his 49 halfway through the fourth quarter, no wonder he ran wild.
Spain's 51-yard touchdown return to the left nailed down a 14-6 West Suburban Silver win for the Lions Friday in LaGrange in which Hinsdale Central lost more than a game.
"We felt we had (the wall) set the two kicks before," said Lyons coach Jack Derning. "Finally we said, 'Field the ball and get to the wall.' And he did."
Standout Red Devils tailback Ryan Swift suffered what may be a broken right collarbone when he scored on a 3-yard touchdown run at 5:48 of the second quarter to make the score 7-6 Lyons.
The injury made the Red Devils offense as ineffective as the Lyons attack, which managed just 45 yards rushing and 19 yards passing.
Hinsdale Central (1-2, 0-1) freshman Justin Sand missed 2 field-goal attempts before Swift's injury, and junior holder Mike Everett mishandled the extra-point snap after Swift's score. …
