Elk Grove Officials Debate Woodfield's Effect on Village

Some Elk Grove Village officials are voicing concern over remaining a member of the Greater Woodfield Convention & Visitors Bureau.
At stake is $80,000 annually the village pays in dues to the organization, which promotes tourism, conventions and trade shows for 13 area communities in both Cook and DuPage counties.
In Elk Grove Village, the money for dues comes from part of the overall hotel and motel tax the village imposes on those establishments.
The village's 10 hotels and motels pay 5 percent of every customer's bill to the village. That amounted to about $1 million last year. The money not used for dues to Greater Woodfield is used in the village's general fund for a variety of purposes.
Trustee James P. Petri claims that hotels and motels are not benefiting much from the village's membership because most of the area conventions and trade shows are held in other towns, such as Schaumburg.
"I have a hard time seeing someone going to a Motel 6 for a convention," Petri said. …
